Three-Season Porch in Friendship Heights

Window panels can be easily replaced with screen panels to make this rustic porch usable year-round. Wood stove heats porch as well as much of the house in winter, while the generous roof overhang and ceiling fan provide comfort in humid DC summers. Brick paved floor can be hosed down, with leaf-pattern floor drain covers located at perimeter wall. Brick knee wall with stone cap supports cedar posts and timber framing. Skylights, hanging cage lights and LED cove lights provide changing light patterns throughout the day and evening. The entire house is off the grid two seasons per year using solar panels to power the house and to charge the 9 kW battery system for night use.
